Making Some Healthy Changes

July 12, 2014 by A Savory Feast 11 Comments

Making Some Healthy Changes
Eating healthy is so hard to do when you are a food blogger! I see so many yummy recipes when I visit other blogs, and I just want to try them all. While I share a lot of healthy recipes on my blog, I also like to make comfort foods, desserts, and big breakfasts.

My boyfriend and his roommates decided to start eating healthier, and it inspired me to make some changes! I am happy with how I look for the most part, but I want to start eating better in order to be healthier and feel better. I’ve been feeling tired a lot, and I know it has a lot to do with how I eat.

I’ve also been going nonstop, filling every extra minute with school work or working on my blog. I’m going to take more time to unplug and relax. I am going to make more of an effort to let myself have a break every now and then. Today, I’m going to lay outside in the sun and read a book.

Here is a look at some of the changes I am going to start making to get healthier:

Breakfast:
My breakfasts used to consist of a cup of coffee with just a little bit of flavored creamer and a bowl of cereal. I’m a weirdo and eat my cereal dry because I don’ like milk! I’m going to start eating scrambled eggs for breakfast and maybe adding in the occasional oatmeal smoothie. I’ll keep the coffee, especially since I don’t add much to it.

Lunch:
When I’m at work, I usually just eat a protein bar for lunch. I’m going to start bringing some salads instead. I recently had a southwest salad with grilled chicken and avocado. I’m obsessed! I have some ideas for how to make my salads ahead of time, so be watching for a post on that!

Dinners:
Andrew and I have already been cooking a lot more instead of going out, and we are going to try to do even more. We are also cutting out breads, pastas, and creamy sauces. This isn’t too hard since we already eat that way for the most part (we love quinoa!).

Snacks & Dessert:
I’m pretty good about heathy snacking already, but desserts are my weakness! I’m going to try to cut out the sugar as much as possible. My starting goal is to limit myself to one dessert a week. We’ll see how that goes!

Drinks:
Because I’ve been trying to save as much money as possible this summer, I’ve already cut out Starbucks, Red Bull, and hard apple cider. Drinking your calories and sugars is the worst, so I’ve felt a lot better since I started doing this.

Even after just a couple days of making these changes, I already feel so much better! I have a lot more energy and feel more focused. I’m excited to see how it goes after a few weeks or months.

What are some of the ways you stay healthy as a food blogger? Stay tuned for some healthy recipes, tips and tricks and more as I start this healthy lifestyle. But don’t worry, I’ll still make some guilty pleasures every once and awhile!

My weaknesses are a need for something sweet in the evening after dinner, and potato chips. Sometimes I’m motivated and I’ll eat fruit instead of chocolate as my evening sweet! I haven’t found anything to swap out the chips for though…feel free to share any recipes for snacks that hit the ‘salt’ taste bud but are healthier! =)

I will be thinking about that, I need a salty alternative too.

I try to never drink my calories (except green smoothies). I find sugar sweetened drinks are so deceiving because they have so many calories but don’t fill you up at all!!

This is so true! I love sweetened drinks but I have to make them a treat for special occasions only.

Sounds like you’re on the right track… I can’t wait to see what recipes and tips you have to share! I always do better when I don’t eat after 6 (we usually eat dinner at 5:30). I always feel horrible when I eat late!

That’s a great tip! I should try to have dinner earlier and avoid snacking at night.

It can be hard… But I saw an interview with Neil Patrick Harris and he lost 30 pounds because he started eating dinner at 7 instead of 9! Typical guy, haha!

These are really great idea! I love taking salads to work. I’m not a HUGE salad fan, so I know that if I bring it to work…I’m forced to eat it because I’m super hungry. Ha. Now, though, I’m starting to like salads more and more.

Thanks Jenna! That is so true about salads. I rarely go out to eat at work because there aren’t many restaurants and its hard to go with a two-year-old, so whatever I bring I have to eat. I like how creative you can be with salads, so that is fun.

I’m with you girl – desserts are my weakness too! I go through phases where I eat ice cream every single night… yep. Sweet tooth over here for sure!

I love desserts way too much! I’ve actually been doing better since I wrote this post, I don’t crave sugar as much. I still “cheat” on desserts every now and then!
