I love cooking with blue cheese. It goes so well with bacon! This Thanksgiving, mix things up with an updated mashed potato recipe. These Blue Cheese & Bacon Mashed Potatoes have all the creaminess you love with the savory taste of blue cheese and bacon.
What are some of your family’s Thanksgiving traditions? For my family, it’s a day long event! We have the traditional dinner of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce and more followed by lots and lots of pie. After that, we go for a bike ride to burn off all that food. At night, we eat leftovers, have a bonfire, and play games.
Thanksgiving is all about enjoying delicious food surrounded by family. That’s my kind of holiday! For this recipe, I wanted to take a traditional dish and give it a more modern twist. Bacon makes everything better, right?

Blue Cheese & Bacon Mashed Potatoes
Ingredients
- 4 large russet potatoes
- 1/4 cup of butter
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1 5 oz package of blue cheese crumbles
- Salt and Pepper to taste

Instructions
- Peel and dice the potatoes. Place in a pot and fill with water to about an inch above the potatoes. Sprinkle with salt and bring to a boil.
- Reduce heat, simmer for 15-20 minutes or until potatoes are tender. Drain.
- Add butter, milk, sour cream and about 1/2 of the blue cheese to the potatoes. Mash until creamy. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Sprinkle the bacon into the mashed potatoes and mix until the pieces are spread throughout.
- Sprinkle with blue cheese, mix gently, and serve immediately.

Ugh, I wish I liked blue cheese because I love bacon and potatoes together! Is the blue cheese really powerful, Jenna? If not, I might give it a go!
Jenna Brussee says
You might like it! It’s not overwhelming. If you can’t do it, try another type of cheese or just do the bacon.

I love how you’ve taken a traditional dish and made it more modern. I’m intrigued by these potatoes, that’s for sure, and I have no doubt my family would LOVE them!
One of our traditions for Thanksgiving is eating around 1-2 p.m. and after the meal, we’ll all go on a long walk, then watch football and generally take it easy and relax until it’s time to eat again. (Because, obviously, you’ve gotta eat more than once!)
Jenna Brussee says
You should try them! The blue cheese adds a great flavor.
That is a great tradition! I love how we both do something to burn off our feast. My family always eats again, too. We usually make sandwiches with the leftover turkey.
Erin says
Oh, I can imagine it does!
Burning off the feast is integral… and a lot of fun! And who doesn’t love a good turkey sandwich that evening?
